691. A CAUCASIAN SHASHKA

RUSSIA, CAUCASUS, 1799-1800.
Length in scabbard 93.5 cm., length of blade 76 cm.


Literature: Arms and Armors from Private Collection, Moscow, Strelets, 2011, pp. 212-213, illustrated.

The shashka with double fullered, slightly curved, single-edged blade. The hilt with hooked, bifurcated pommel and mountings of the scabbard are silver, chiselled and nielloed. An Arabic inscription and date 1214 (according to the Moslem calendar) engraved on the upper scabbard band. The wooden scabbard covered in leather (work in a Turkish style) and silver mounted en suite with the hilt, decorated in a style of engraving and niello (work in Cherkessk style).
