RUSSIAN, CIRCA 1700

31.2 by 26.8 cm.

The Mother of God embraces her Son tenderly while turning her gaze away both from Him and the viewer. Their facial features are executed in soft shades of brown, formed by faint lines and subtle white brushstrokes. The maphorion of the Mother of God is ornamented with delicate embroidery, its folds highlighted in gold, lined in bright red. Christ’s chiton is rendered with intense chrysography. Their names are inscribed in contracted form in the flanking cartouches, on pale orange ground with ochre border.
