46. THE PRESENTATION OF CHRIST IN THE TEMPLE
RUSSIAN (SUZDAL PROVINCES), FIRST HALF OF THE XIX CENTURY

The composition is set around an altar with the open Bible upon it, the elderly priest, St. Symeon, leans forward while holding the Baby Jesus in his veiled hands, behind him is St. Anna with a raised hand suggesting the fulfilment of the prophecy, opposite is the Mother of God preparing to receive her Son in her covered hands, attended by St. Joseph, against a tall construction and the staircase of the ambo.
