CENTRAL RUSSIA, LATE XIX CENTURY

* 19. THE MOTHER OF GOD OF TIKHVIN

CENTRAL RUSSIA, LATE XIX CENTURY

71 by 57.2 cm.
7,000-9,000 pounds

The faces are rendered with earthy tones, the features outlined in black, the rounded surfaces emphasised by brighter brushstrokes. The deep maroon maphorion of the Mother of God has orange edges that correspond to the tunic of Christ. The haloes are with beaded rims, the background is tooled in palmette patterns. The stylised foliage of the border emulates contemporary enamelled frames. The icon is presented in a gilt frame applied with opulent, carved gilt vine decoration, set in a glazed, wood kyot.
