Pisemsky was a master of landscape painting with a lyrical sensibility, delicately portraying the natural world of central Russia. Unlike In the Pine Grove, most of this artist’s views are untouched by sunlight. In the picturesque words of his contemporaries, Pisemsky was trying to convey the "modest spectacle of grey days". This artist would, in each of his works, even the least significant in terms of size, without fail achieve the highest standard of finish, and his punctilious attention to detail was welcomed by the conservative high society elites of both capitals. Few of this artist’s pictures returned from exhibition. For example, their regular sale to members of the Imperial family was absolutely normal for the academic art salons. Pisemsky could provide serious competition to Konstantin Kryzhitsky, Yuli Klever and even Ivan Shishkin. His classic Russian landscapes occupy a well-deserved place in the State Tretyakov Gallery and the State Russian Museum.
