A deeply Russian painter with a tragic life, Yuri Cherkessof was a descendant of Decembrist Vasily Ivashev. He studied under Petrov-Vodkin and was married to Alexandre Benois' daughter, Anna. Came to Paris in 1925 where he worked as a painter and as a book illustrator. Committed suicide in 1943. He had portraits painted by Z. Serebryakova and E. Benois.
