David Widhopff was born in Odessa in 1867 and graduated from the Odessa school of art, then studied in Munkhen Academy of Art. He himself taught art briefly in Rio de Janeiro. Came to Paris in the 1890s, painted portraits, worked with French publishers and magazines including "Courier Francais" and "L'assiette au beurre". Was the only foreigner to be elected to Head of the Salon of Drawers-Caricaturists. Exhibited in the Salon d'Automne, Salon des Independents etc. Was awarded the medal of the French Legion.
