Nude with a Mirror acts as a vivid example of the work created in Italy by Alessio Issupoff, a strikingly talented student of Konstantin Korovin, one of Russia’s most celebrated Impressionists.

Throughout his life, Issupoff worked in a number of different genres, but whereas in Russia he was primarily known as a landscape artist, in Italy, to where he moved with his family in 1926 for health reasons, he was renowned first and foremost as a portraitist.

In Nude with a Mirror, Issupoff skilfully manages to combine classic Salon subject matter with an impressionistic manner of execution. The softness of the colour scheme and light effects reflects the intimacy of the scene portrayed, with a nude young woman, full of life and beauty, depicted in the calmness and quiet of her boudoir. The artist’s manner of execution, with the use of broad, visible brushstrokes and a certain generalisation of form all pay tribute to Modernism.

Issupoff ’s paintings can be found in the State Tretyakov and Uffizi Galleries as well as in private collections in Russia, Europe and the USA.
