65. GERASIMOV, SERGEI 1885-1964

By the River/ Summer Day c.1921 and c.1939.

Oil on panel, 96 by 58 cm.
50,000-70,000 Pounds

Provenance: Vasiliy Pushkarev collection.
Authenticity certificate from Vasiliy Pushkarev's widow.

In 1958 Gerasimov received the title of National Painter of the USSR. Away from the political arena, he frequently chose spring and summer motifs for his work. This Lot is a double-sided work. By the River was painted in 1921, the year the artist joined the World of Art movement. It is in the so-called Russian Cezannist style; on the other side, Summer Landscape was painted in 1939, and produced in a more traditional style, reminiscent of his teacher Konstantin Korovin. This double-sided work serves as a magnificent illustration of the history of the Russian art of 1920–1940.
