In 1958 Gerasimov received the title of National Painter of the USSR. Away from the political arena, he frequently chose spring and summer motifs for his work. This Lot is a double-sided work. By the River was painted in 1921, the year the artist joined the World of Art movement. It is in the so-called Russian Cezannist style; on the other side, Summer Landscape was painted in 1939, and produced in a more traditional style, reminiscent of his teacher Konstantin Korovin. This double-sided work serves as a magnificent illustration of the history of the Russian art of 1920–1940.
