As with his other decorative works of this style, The Allegorical Composition by Konstantin Makovsky, with its dazzling and surreal beauty, can be seen as a precursor of the Symbolist and Modernist movements in Russian art. It was commissioned by Pavel von Derviz family to be hung in the ballroom of his palace on Angliskaya Naberezhnaya.
