The icon is a complex iconographic composition, incorporating many figures and portraying the Apocalypse. The subject is Divine Judgement over the quick and the dead being dispensed to all according to their deeds and their sins. The righteous obtain eternal bliss in paradise, and the sinners receive the torments they deserve in hell. The central part of the icon depicts Christ’s Second Coming to administer Judgement in the name of the Heavenly Father.
The icon shows every sign of having been painted in an icon workshop at one of the monasteries, where the aim was to create an historic artefact primarily for purposes of enlightenment. The lower portion of the panel bears eloquent witness to this, with its three rows full of inscribed text.
