This festive, joyous work by Mikhail Bobyshov dates from 1947 and gives us a glimpse of post-war Moscow. An enormous fir tree on Manege Square is festooned with lights and garlands. The street is busy — New Year celebrations are in the air. Bobyshov excelled at depicting festivities, fireworks, street illuminations. The artist’s shimmering, “mosaic” style was perfect for these kinds of works, imbued with merriment and recording an immediate impression.
