These candelsticks are a fine example of Empire style and were executed around 1820. They are modelled on French bronze objects, which was typical for the St. Petersburg decorative bronze workshops of that time. A fashion for French decorative objects started after the war of 1812 when the first examples were brought to Russia by the army. In Russia the style underwent some transformation and acquired a local flavour.
We are thankful to Mrs. A.G. Geyko, head of the Bronze department of Hermitage Museum for her assistance in the cataloguing of this item.
