VOLOGODA REGION, END OF THE 18TH CENTURY
44 by 35 cm.
15,000-20,000 pounds
The composition of the icon reproduces the extended version of the Dormition of the Virgin scene, including the angels flying on the clouds towards the death-bed of the Virgin (the so-called “cloudy” Dormition) and the episode of the punishment of the wretched Auphonia (or Jephonias) by Archangel Michael. The image is accompanied by selected saints in the margins, such as two venerable and two holy fools, which demonstrate that the icon was painted for a small monastic church. The closeness of this iconographic version to the renowned examples of art from the Vologda provinces suggests that the icon originated from the same area.
