PALEKH, BEGINNING TO FIRST QUARTER OF THE 19TH CENTURY
54 by 43 cm.
25,000-30,000 pounds
This icon is distinctive because of the high technical level of miniature painting, which makes it outstanding even among other fine Palekh icons. The elaboration of the fleecy and curly clouds, the miniature details of the multipartite compositions characteristic of Palekh, the finesse of the landscape, and the virtuoso rendering of the architecture are polished to perfection. The colouristic combinations and the pincer-like finishing of the scenes separated from the main frame by decorative niello-imitating borders are also very spectacular. The composition is crowned with the illustration of the ”All Creation Rejoices in Thee” hymn, painted within a circle.
