RUSSIAN (SUZDAL), FIRST HALF OF THE XIX CENTURY
44.7 by 88.1 cm.
20,000-25,000 pounds
Among the disciples at the table are John who fell asleep on Christ’s chest and had a vision of the Apocalypse, as well as Judas in the foreground who is depicted holding the silver-filled pouch; the icon has a special reference to the Holy Communion, both because of the paten and chalice that appear on the table, but also because Christ is holding the bread, thus preparing for the “Fractio Panis”.
