The crucifix stands at the rocky summit of Golgotha, flanked by the lance and the sponge, to the left are the Mother of God and Mary Magdalene, to the right are St. John the Evangelist and Longinus. Behind are the buildings of Jerusalem and in the skies there are a blooded moon and darkened sun; the gold haloes and details of the garments standing out against the darker colours of the composition.
