RUSSIAN (MOSCOW?), SECOND HALF OF THE XVIII CENTURY

* 24. THE MOTHER OF GOD OF THE SIGN

RUSSIAN (MOSCOW?), SECOND HALF OF THE XVIII CENTURY

31.5 by 27.3 cm.
20,000-25,000 pounds

Flanked by two seraphs, the Mother of God turns her gaze away from the viewer while raising her hands in prayer. Wearing a tripartite halo, against a circular, rayed glory, Christ is portrayed in blessing and holding a Book. The flesh is structured softly, and the features are outlined in dark colours that contrast with the bright shades of the rounded areas. The saturated pink haloes and Christ’s garments stand out against the deep red and gold of the maphorion of the Mother of God.
