In the twenties, in addition to painting portraits of renowned poets, intellectuals and political figures, Annenkov produced a series of collages using several distinct and contrasting materials and combining abstract geometrical forms and lines with figurative motifs and household objects.
In this work, the brown paper appears moved by an unseen force from the arched blue background and responds to the frightened monkey at the bottom of the work. It could be said that this is a satirical allusion to the entrapment of people by the expanding strength of the Revolution.
