Vadim Sidur was inspired to create The Admonisher following the artist’s meeting with Rudolf Augstein, the founder of Der Spiegel magazine, in Moscow in 1978. The sculpture was conceived as a model for the monument symbolizing the freedom of the press and was to be installed in front of the Der Spiegel headquarters in Hamburg. Although the Der Spiegel project was abandoned, the monument based on the model of The Admonisher was subsequently installed in Dusseldorf in 1985.
