Forced to abandon his studies to earn a living, Kharitonov studied independently and devoted a great deal of time studying Byzantine icons, ancient Russian painting and church embroidery, which he incorporated into his work.
In his early years Kharitonov often painted purely abstract works or created graphic, grotesque images of distant romantic lands, with elements of local colour.
