The exciting collection (lots 1–11, 14, 79–81 and 121–124), offered for sale, brings together a remarkable assembly of works by some of the masters of Russian Contemporary art. The group boasts a distinguished provenance, coming from the collection of the Schoeni family in Hong Kong. The father of the current owner, Manfred Schoeni, was one of the pioneers of the Chinese Contemporary art market, opening a gallery in Hong Kong in 1992 which encouraged recognition of this previously neglected – though now hugely successful – field.

This group of Russian works features the same innovative spirit. An impressive canvas by Oleg Tselkov (Woman with Candle) and Natalia Nesterova (The City) keeps company with the playful wit of Vladimir Yankilevsky’s Composition with a Black Circle and Viacheslav Kalinin’s provocative trio Woman with Accordion, Date with a Prostitute and Rock ‘n’ Roll. In addition, three powerful works by Oscar Rabin and a selection of ground-breaking works by younger artists, including Alexei Sundukov and Alexander Zakharov, round off this notable collection.
