The present lot is a design for the backcloth for the ballet Dark Elegies, set to the song cycle Kindertotenlieder by Gustav Mahler and first presented by Ballet Rambert at the Duchess Theatre in London on 19 February 1937, with set and costume designs by Nadia Benois.
