403. CROSSING THE BALKANS
AFTER A MODEL BY EVGENY LANCERAY, INSCRIBED WITH A SIGNATURE IN CYRILLIC, FURTHER INDISTINCTLY INSCRIBED, LATE 19TH CENTURY

This work commemorates the heroic winter crossing of the Balkans by the Russian army during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878. To the left, a soldier helps his horse climb a steep slope, in the centre another Cossack lowers his head trying to protect himself against harsh icy winds, whilst the soldier on the right begins his descent, leading a heavily-loaded horse. The arched composition refers to the fact that it was intended as a mantle clock, however it was also sold as a freestanding sculpture as suggested by the varying prices – 700 for the bronze with the clock and 350 Rubles for a self-standing group. The composition was further split to form independent groups entitled “Horseman in the Balkans” and “Crossing the Balkans: Soldier on his Horse”.
