Provenance: Private collection, UK.

This portrait was executed at the estate of the patron and collector of Zaporozhian antiquities V.V. Tarnovsky in the Chernigov region. In 1880 Repin was working on sketches in connection with Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks to Sultan Mehmed IV of the Ottoman Empire (1880–1891), now in the State Russian Museum.
