The Paris-born sculptor Napoleon Jacques worked
in Russia from 1833 to 1858. He is known for several works which have Russian subject matter, for example the 1841 statue of Peter the Great, placed
in Kronstadt, and a 1952 figure of A Woodsman. He can be considered as one of the founders of realistic plastic art in Russia. This piece is believed to be modelled from life and was cast in a French foundry.
