The artist of this dream-like work, Vladimir Baranoff-Rossiné, was one of the most talented Russian artists of the École de Paris. The artist tested his skill in many styles, indefatigable in his fascination with the latest artistic ideas and made several discoveries in this field.
Fairy Lake could be included among his experiments with “dynamic painting”. He executed this work in a Symbolist style, finding a way to plastically express non-material entities and combining both the colour and musical origins of this work on one canvas. The dark blue and purple tones of sky and water — so favoured by the Symbolists — seem to embody the poetic dream and create a distinctive, mysterious atmosphere.
