Born in 1815 in Davesco near Lugano, Carlo Bossoli emigrated at a young age to Odessa with his family. A superb draughtsman, the artist received commissions not only from the court in St Petersburg, but his patrons also included Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, and Queen Victoria.

Specialising in cityscapes and other vistas, Bossoli travelled extensively throughout Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, documenting cities from London to Moscow. He visited the Crimea on several occasions, where he executed particularly fine views of its landscapes and cities.
