Fishermen Street, Capri, belongs to the famous Capri series of paintings started by Gorbatov on his 1911–13 tour of Europe. This trip was crucial for Gorbatov’s development. In Capri, Gorbatov painted several seascapes. He often reproduced his subject matter, and repeatedly returned to his favourite “little corner of the world”, so he could study the effect of light on the blue of the sea, the colourful shores, the white-washed buildings, the dark courtyards, the vineyards, branches of apple trees and the sunlit terraced shores. Another version of Fishermen Street, Capri can be found in the New Jerusalem Museum.
