A Secret

* 393. MALIAVIN, PHILIPPE 1869-1940

A Secret signed, also numbered "15" on the reverse

Oil on canvas, 71 by 61 cm.
45,000-60,000 GBP

When it comes down to the depiction of Russian peasant life, there are probably no better examples than Philippe Maliavin’s portraits of peasant women in their colourful costumes.

Born into a poor peasant family, Maliavin had a deep understanding of the psychology of his sitters. This savvy woman looks upon us from above, not quite sure what to make of the contemplator. Or maybe she has just told us a secret, waiting for our reaction?

Whatever the interpretation, Maliavin’s portraits are so engaging that they draw us right into his creative world.
