This small, lectern-size icon, a copy of the wonder-working image of the Mother of God of Kazan, must have been intended as a specially commissioned item for the private devotions of a female representative of a wealthy family. This is suggested by the depictions of the virgin martyrs Agrippina and Tatiana and its decoration with a heavy silver oklad. Judging by the manner of painting and the style of the icon, its artist was very familiar with the traditions of the Armoury school, although his technique is rather inferior. The artistic decoration of the icon’s oklad corresponds with the period of the painting, but could be from a slightly later period.
