RUSSIAN (MOSCOW?), LAST QUARTER OF THE XVIII CENTURY

32.6 by 25.9 cm.

The image is organised around the bier that carries the lifeless body of the Mother of God, surrounded by mourning Apostles and two groups of holy women under the circular buildings in the background. On the vertical axis beginning from the bottom is the sacrilegious Jeremiah, behind the bier stands Christ in an ovoid, radiating glory and supported by angels, holds the soul of His Mother. Above is the Assumption of the Mother of God, and at the very top two angels are waiting to receive her in Paradise; five family patrons appear on the border.
