* 54. A PAIR OF RUSSIAN BRONZE CANDELABRA Russia, 1815-1820

These candelabra are a fine example of Empire style and were executed around 1820. They are modelled on French bronze objects, which was typical for the St. Petersburg decorative bronze workshops of that time.

A fashion for French decorative objects started after the war of 1812 when the first examples were brought to Russia by the army. In Russia the style underwent some transformation and acquired a local flavour.
7,000-9,000 Pounds

Mrs. A.G Geyko, Head of Bronze Department, Hermitage Museum, assisted in cataloguing this item.
