The icon is narrating the Descent of Christ into the Underworld and His raising of the Forefathers during the three days of His burial, the upper part showing His Resurrection from the Tomb and events that preceded or followed His victory over Death; the fine image painted meticulously with pastel colours complemented by an abundance of gold elements, the relief decoration on the sarcophagus and buildings in the background in white. An inscription at the back of the icon testifies the circumstances of its creation: “Purchased by S. E. Penin on the 14th of November 1909. It was painted by Dmitry M. R.(?) artist of the Nizhny Novgorod area. The price of the icon was 30 Rubles without a kyot, plus 5 Rubles for a kyot. It is showing 80 faces”.
