The Mother of God holding a staff is accompanied by two elderly apostles while she appears to St. Sergei and his disciple St. Nikon. The event takes place against two tall buildings and an arched enclosure. An image of the Old Testament Trinity appears in the celestial segment on the upper part of the composition. The figures are rendered with deep colours against a paler background.
