CENTRAL RUSSIA, FIRST HALF OF THE XVII CENTURY

33.4 by 27.5 cm.
15,000-20,000 pounds

Seated on a throne supported by an image of the 11th Century Byzantine Monastery built above the Caves in Kiev, the Mother of God is portrayed frontal holding Christ in blessing on her lap; flanked by the holy monks Anthony and Theodosius, founders of monasticism in Kiev, both displaying inscribed scrolls, pointing to the Mother and Child, wearing monastic vestments complemented by the Great Schema; the composition is executed traditionally with subdued ochre colours allowing the deep tones of the figures’ cloaks to stand out.
