An Austrian artist, who worked for most of his life in Vienna, and produced a great number of ornamental sculptures. His subjects include ladies dancing, horseback riding, joyful naked figures, and girls in fabulous short-cut or theatrical outfits as well as figures in everyday dress. Lorenzl normally placed his nudes on tall onyx columns to make them seem more ethereal. Clothed statuettes were not only adorned using a special “cold” technique but were often embellished with bright, coloured designs. In his best works Lorenzl created an image of the “new woman” with a slim youthful figure that became the ideal of the 1920s, dressed fashionably, with hair cropped or worn in the “Gorgon” style. The Dancing Girl sculpture is a typical example of such works produced in the trademark style of this creative master.

Josef Lorenzl is one of the most famous masters of Austrian sculpture. Working at the Goldscheider Manufactory and Majolica Factory he created extravagant sculptures of women in bronze and ivory, and ceramic, paying homage to contemporary fashions.
