The creative output of Sergei Sudikin is multifaceted and its stylistic structure was formed during the mid 1900s-early 1910s when the artist was actively collaborating with the Blue Rose and the World of Art groups. During this period the artist painted stylised compositions depicting pastoral and “gallant scene”, festivities, still-lifes with flowers and porcelain figurines.

Sudeikin loved to depict traditional Russian moulded clay figurines, particularly handcrafted Dymkovo toys which were distinguished by their bright colours and dramatic black contour. The present work incorporates the artist’s favourite subject. Due to its magnificently centric composition and dynamism of depicted objects, this painting is rightly considered to be one of the best works by Sudeikin from the early 1920s.
