Amateur Artist Working en Plein Air, signed, inscribed in Cyrillic "Volga", titled and dated 1896, also further signed, inscribed "Volga/250 r.", titled and dated on the backing cardboard.

Pencil, watercolour and gouache on paper, laid on cardboard, 24 by 18.5 cm (cardboard size).

Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by the expert V. Petrov.

The present lot is part of the series of works with the same subject and similar composition created by Vladimir Makovsky in the mid 1890s–early 1900s. The earliest painting Dilettante (1895) is currently in the collection of the Transcarpathian Art Museum, Uzhgorod. The works Amateur and Amateur at Work appeared respectively at the 1897 Peredvizhniki exhibition and at the artist’s 1902 solo exhibition.
