An artist, poet, composer, thinker, talented teacher and a founder member of the “Lianozovo” Group, Kropivnitsky graduated from the Imperial Stroganov Art College in 1911.
In the 1920s he was close to the “Jack of Diamonds” circle of artists and dabbled in cubism and futurism. His style as an artist was defined by Genrikh Sagpir as belonging to the "minimalist" and "aestheticism" movements.
In 1963 he was expelled from the Union of Artists on grounds of “formalism” and for creating the "Lianozovo" Group.
