Portrait of a Man with His Arm in a Sling, inscribed “Kapulivka” and dated 1886, also further inscribed with an authentication by the artist and collector Ilya Ostroukhov on the backing board.

Provenance: Private collection, Israel.

In the spring of 1880 Repin visited the Cossack settlement of Kapulivka where he spent time among the descendants of the Zaporozhian Cossacks. He later returned to the area in 1886 when he was working on his masterpiece Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks to Sultan Mehmed IV of the Ottoman Empire.
