From a Polish aristocratic family. Brought up in Kiev, a friend of Larionov, Burliuk and Mayakovsky. In 1914-1917 fought in the cavalry brigade of Michail Arkhangel, was awarded three George Crosses. In 1918 was arrested as a monarchist but released on Dzerzhinsky's orders. Came to Paris in 1920, in 1921 moved to New York. One of the founders of the abstract-expressionist movement in American art.
