Literature: Exhibition catalogue, Icona. Volto del Mistero, Milan, 1991, p.186.

The panel is dominated by the robust standing figure of the Church Father, portrayed frontal with his hands extended, the right one in blessing and the veiled left hand holding the Gospels. His Episcopal sakkos is decorated with cruciform patterns, complemented by gold trimmings adorned with gems and pearls. His elderly features are shaped by dark outlines and white brushstrokes. In the background there is an image of the principality of Vladimir-Suzdal, enclosed behind high walls with pinnacles and domed buildings inside. At the very top is a roundel showing a bust-image of Christ Pantokrator; the upper part of the icon and the raised border are applied with gold leaf.
