162. THE ANOINTING OF A BISHOP BY CHRIST THE HIGH PRIEST

GREEK (IONIAN ISLANDS), XVII CENTURY

41.5 by 32.4 cm.
7,000-9,000 pounds

Provenance: This lot was purchased by the present owner from the Sotheby’s sale, 15 June 1995, Lot 34.

The image is set around a canopy where Christ, dressed in full Episcopal attire, performs the sacrament of Chrismation, at which the Holy Spirit is bestowed upon the faithful. The kneeling saint crosses his hands on his chest while Christ conveys the powers of the Holy Spirit, personified in this icon by a dove. The central scene is flanked by two groups of attendants, including angels in sacred vestments and saints. The upper part of the composition shows God the Father, angels and seraphs on clouds.
