This rarely represented subject shows the Ten Martyrs from Crete who suffered death during the persecution of Emperor Trajanus Decius in the third century. They are named Agathopus, Basilides, Eunician, Euporus, Evaristos, Cleomenes, Gelasios, Saturninos, Theodulos and Zoticos. Arranged over two rows, each saint holds a cross, an image of the blessing Christ emerges from the open heavens, the icon is painted delicately, the hems of the garments decorated in gold, the folds defined in white, on a gold background, set in a contemporary carved and gilded wooden frame.
