Divided into three tiers, the lower one shows half-length portraits of selected Church Fathers, the middle one represents an extended Deisis flanked by the Ascension and the Pokrov at the far left and the Dormition and Presentation to the Temple to the right, and the top tier begins with the Old Testament Trinity, followed by a narrative of Christ's life, the Passion and Resurrection and ends with a portrait of the Mother of God of the Sign. The images are carved in relief on boxwood, the icon placed in a gilt frame with dividers, the latter bearing identifying inscriptions of the adjacent figures and events.
