* 84. THE MONASTIC STS. ZOSIMA AND SAVATII, FOUNDERS OF THE SOLOVETSKY MONASTERY, IN ADORATION OF THE MOTHER OF GOD OF THE SIGN, WITH A SILVER-GILT AND ENAMELLED BASMA

RUSSIAN (MOSCOW), CIRCA 1600

33 by 27.7 cm.
55,000-65,000 pounds

The elongated figures of the two elderly saints are portrayed in three-quarter view, turning towards the centre and looking to heaven where an image of the Mother of God emerges from the open celestial segment; both saints are wearing monks’ robes, and the Great Schema thus shows that they have reached the highest ranks of monasticism. To the right border there is a relief image of the Bishop St. Aleksi representing the family patron; the icon is executed with sombre colours according to the traditional rules of icon painting; the silver-gilt basma with meticulously executed cloisonne foliage in greens and blues.
